Why the blue bubble gets answered and the green one does not
Blue bubbles get read because the colour is a sorting signal your buyer applies before the words register. Green means a business, a shortcode or a robot; blue means a person holding a phone. The channel also carries voice notes, photos and read receipts, none of which business SMS can do.
What does the bubble colour actually signal?
The bubble colour signals which network carried the message. Your buyer learned to read green as business and blue as person. Nobody taught them; they learned by pattern, over years.
Green is where delivery notifications, appointment robots, and political texts live. Blue is where their family is. A green bubble from an unknown number gets ignored before the first word is read.
Rewriting a green-bubble message rarely rescues it. You are optimising the inside of an envelope the reader already decided not to open.
What can you send on iMessage that SMS cannot carry?
iMessage carries conversation media; SMS carries text and links. A fifteen-second voice note in your own voice proves a person is on the other end, faster than three paragraphs.
Photos land at full resolution, not compressed. Read receipts tell the exact second your message was seen. Tapbacks let someone confirm without typing. Every one eliminates friction from the conversation.
- Voice notes, at the length a human actually speaks
- Photos and video at full resolution, not carrier-compressed
- Read receipts, so you know when to follow up rather than guessing
- Tapbacks and one-word confirmations that cost the reader nothing
- One persistent thread instead of a new stranger every campaign
What does the blue bubble not fix?
Blue bubbles do not fix a bad offer, a wrong list, or a broadcast-sounding message. The channel gets your message looked at. What happens next is still on you.
Consent law under the TCPA applies on every channel, in every state. The channel changes delivery, not the rules. Anyone selling you a channel as a way around consent is selling you a lawsuit.
Blue buys you attention. Lessons four through eight are about what to do with it.
Why does no carrier registration apply to iMessage?
A2P 10DLC governs application-to-person messaging on US carrier SMS routes. iMessage does not use those routes, so no registration, approval queue, or wait per campaign.
Consent obligations come from the law, not the carriers. They follow you onto every channel you use.
What to take from lesson 3
- Your buyer sorts by bubble colour before reading, so a rewrite cannot rescue a green-bubble envelope.
- Voice notes, full-resolution photos and read receipts are channel capabilities, not features.
- Blue buys attention. It does not fix the offer, the list, or your consent obligations.
