Why do iMessage platforms charge a setup fee?

The fee buys the physical line: a dedicated number, real Apple hardware, carrier activation, and fallback wiring. Across the category it runs $99 to $500 and is usually final when paid. The two things to compare are what it includes and whether it can be waived. Blue Reacher's $449 activation includes implementation, where the workflows and sequences are built for you, and it is waived entirely on annual billing.

The published fee sheet, September 2026: Tuco AI charges from $335, non-refundable from the moment provisioning starts, scaling with line count. Project Blue charges $500. Sendara charges $99 plus $30 for an area code. Every one of those buys provisioning only; the campaigns are still yours to build. The comparison lane is mapped on the platforms roundup.

Blue Reacher's $449 covers the number with a custom area code, RCS then SMS fallback enablement, and implementation: funnel mapping, workflows, and sequence copy built for you, documented in what white-glove setup covers. On annual billing the fee is waived, which prices year one at $1,949 all-in.

The buying question is not whether a fee exists, it is what happens after it clears. A provisioning-only fee leaves the integration and copy work on your desk; an implementation fee removes it. Price both against the real cost of running it yourself.
