The 2026 B2B Outbound Channel Mix: What Still Works
TL;DR
No single channel carries a B2B outbound program in 2026. Cold email averages a 3.43% reply rate, LinkedIn 2.96% per connection request, and cold calling needs roughly 370 dials per meeting. The mix wins: cheap channels build recognition, phone and iMessage convert it into booked appointments. Sequence them so your highest-response channel never goes first.

What are the real 2026 reply-rate benchmarks?
Cold email: 3.43% reply. LinkedIn: 28.5% acceptance. Cold calls: 9.9% connect. The spread within channels (Instantly's top decile hits 10.7%) beats the spread between channels.
SMS and iMessage, the two channels vendors shout about most, carry the thinnest published evidence.
| Channel | 2026 benchmark | Source and date | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold email (replies) | 3.43% average, 5.5% top quartile, 10.7% top decile | Instantly 2026 Cold Email Benchmark Report, updated Jan 12, 2026 | Billions of interactions, Jan 1 to Dec 18, 2025 |
| Cold email (meetings) | 0.7% of emails sent become booked meetings, 2-3% top decile | Cleanlist, Feb 18, 2026, updated Jul 17, 2026 | Aggregated, includes Woodpecker's 20M+ email study |
| Cold call | 9.9% connect per dial, 24.5% per prospect, ~370 dials per booked meeting | Belkins, published Jun 26, 2026 | 175,000+ dials, calendar year 2025 |
| 28.5% acceptance, 10.4% reply after connecting, 3.0% reply to the request itself | Expandi, published May 19, 2026 | 13,218,869 connection requests, May 2025 to Apr 2026 | |
| SMS | 45% response, 98% open, in a marketing and follow-up context | Gartner, "Tap Into The Marketing Power of SMS" | Not a cold B2B prospecting dataset |
| iMessage | 30-45% response rate claimed | Sendblue sales page, accessed Jul 2026 | No sample size, study or date disclosed |
Why doesn't one channel carry a program anymore?
LinkedIn: 28.5% acceptance × 10.4% reply = 2.96%. Cold email: 3.43%. Roughly 34 LinkedIn touches per reply vs. 29 emails: nearly identical odds, different channel.
Email and LinkedIn feel like multichannel. On math, one bet placed twice at nearly the same cost, failing the same way: a stranger competing with a hundred others in a queue.
Email dies at spam (0.3% ceiling). LinkedIn at gate. Phone at voicemail (370 dials/meeting). Text at ignore. Stack these and the sequence survives when any one breaks.
How much should you trust each channel's number?
Grade benchmarks before you staff. Two numbers: eight and nine-figure datasets with dates. One: six-figure single-vendor study. The rest: marketing pages with no methodology. That matters before you reallocate headcount.
Our rule: halve any benchmark without a sample size and date, then run a 200-prospect pilot. Two hundred prospects separate 5% reply from 25%, and cost a week if wrong instead of a quarter.
- Grade A: LinkedIn and cold email. Expandi analyzed 13,218,869 connection requests across 13,302 accounts from May 2025 to April 2026. Instantly aggregated platform-wide data across all of 2025. Both are large, dated and measuring the medium rather than selling one specific product.
- Grade B: cold calling. Belkins published 175,000+ dials from calendar year 2025 on June 26, 2026, combining dialer logs with anonymized HubSpot exports. Single vendor, but the sample is real and the method is stated.
- Grade C: cold B2B SMS. The famous 45% response rate traces back to Gartner's "Tap Into The Marketing Power of SMS," which covers marketing and follow-up messaging to people who already know the sender. Reading it as a cold prospecting benchmark is a category error.
- Grade C: iMessage. Sendblue's sales page claimed 30-45% response rates with no sample size, study or date attached. That doesn't make the claim false. It makes it untested, which is a different problem and one you fix with a pilot.
What is each channel actually best at now?
Assign each channel a job. The useful question: what work does each do best, and where in the sequence?
- Cold email: reach. Near-zero marginal cost per touch, capped by deliverability rather than budget. Its job is making sure your name isn't brand new the first time a human tries to reach the prospect directly.
- LinkedIn: credentialing. Its job is letting the prospect confirm in four seconds that you're a real person at a real company. Treat the 28.5% acceptance rate as a permission signal. It says almost nothing about pipeline.
- Cold calling: qualification. The only channel where you learn something in real time and can handle an objection while it's still forming. At 370 dials per meeting it's the most expensive touch you own, so point it at accounts that already have two or three touches behind them.
- SMS: logistics. Confirmations, reschedules, reminders and speed-to-lead replies once a relationship exists. Cold SMS in the US runs through A2P 10DLC registration, and since February 2025 the major carriers block unregistered A2P traffic from 10-digit numbers outright.
- iMessage: replies. Its job is converting recognition you already built into a thumb actually moving. It's the closing touch of the awareness phase, not the opening one.
Where does iMessage actually fit?
iMessage goes mid-sequence as the touch generating replies. Not for cold ten thousand strangers. It lands in the same thread as colleague and kid messages on 58.13% of US smartphones (StatCounter, December 2025).
No independent cold B2B iMessage benchmark exists. Structurally: blue bubbles arrive in conversation threads, not promotions, report reads/receipts, need no A2P. Blue Reacher customers see 2-3x appointments; test yours.
How should you sequence the channels?
Never make your first touch on your best channel. Response rate depends on channel plus prior recognition. Firing your best at day-one strangers wastes it. Save it for day nine.
A sample 21-day multi-channel sequence
Two details beat copy. LinkedIn day two: no note. Expandi: notes barely move acceptance (26.42% with vs. 26.37% without), so save personalization post-accept. Day nine references earlier touches.
| Day | Channel | Move |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Value hypothesis, under 80 words, one question at the end | |
| 2 | Connection request, no note | |
| 4 | One specific proof point, named customer or number | |
| 6 | Short message if accepted, referencing the emails | |
| 8 | Phone | First dial, morning block |
| 9 | iMessage | First text, names the prior touches, asks one low-friction question |
| 12 | New angle, different pain, not a bump of the last one | |
| 15 | Phone | Second dial, different time of day |
| 17 | iMessage | Direct ask for 15 minutes with two concrete time options |
| 21 | Close the loop, move to quarterly nurture |
What should you actually measure?
Measure booked appointments per 100 prospects, hold rate, and cost per held appointment. Cleanlist (July 2026): 0.7% of emails produce meetings against 3.1% reply rate. Most replies don't close.
Belkins: 370 dials per meeting is six rep-days at 60 dials/day. A $249 line with unlimited sends pays for one extra appointment on most B2B deals above $5k. Lines pace 50 opted-in / 30 cold new contacts daily; replies never meter.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good cold email reply rate in 2026?
3.43% platform average (Instantly's 2026 report, Jan 2026). Top quartile: 5.5%. Top decile: 10.7%. Below 3% means list, deliverability, or offer is broken. Judge against booked meetings: only 0.7% of emails sent produce one (Cleanlist, July 2026).
Is cold calling dead in 2026?
No, but it's expensive and should be aimed. Belkins' June 2026 study: 9.9% connect rate per dial, ~370 dials per booked meeting, 24.5% pick up across multiple attempts. Calling is the only real-time channel, so spend it on accounts with 2-3 prior touches.
Can I replace cold email with iMessage?
No. Email is cheap reach across thousands, capped by deliverability. iMessage generates replies and converts recognition into appointments, so it needs recognition to exist first. Use it at position six, not position one.
How many touches should a multi-channel sequence have?
About ten touches across three weeks, no single channel over four. Instantly data: 58% replies on first touch, 42% on steps two onward. Four-to-seven touches optimal for email alone. Multiple channels let you hit ten touches without exceeding Google/Yahoo's 0.3% spam ceiling.
Do I need A2P 10DLC registration to send iMessage outreach?
No A2P 10DLC registration required on Blue Reacher iMessage. Since Feb 2025, major US carriers block unregistered A2P traffic, so SMS programs must register before sending. Non-iPhone contacts fall back to RCS then SMS, so one sequence covers your full list.

ChatGPT Can Send iMessages Now. It Still Cannot Run Outbound.
OpenAI's Apple Messages plugin can read your message history and send a text as you, on one Mac, with an approval tap per message. Sales teams are asking whether that replaces an outreach platform. The answer sits in OpenAI's own documentation and usage policies rather than in anybody's opinion.
Never Put a Link in Your First Text
Your first text to someone who has never messaged you back is not the same object as every message after it. On iPhone the link inside it will not open. On carrier SMS the same link is one of the strongest reasons a message gets filtered before it lands. Both problems disappear the moment the person replies, which makes the reply the only thing the opener should be built to win.
