What is SMS segment?
An SMS segment is a 160-character unit of billing; longer messages are split into multiple segments and billed for each one.
Standard GSM encoding allows 160 characters per segment, dropping to 153 per segment for multi-part messages. A single emoji switches the message to Unicode encoding, cutting capacity to 70 characters per segment.
Segment math is why per-message SMS pricing is hard to forecast: a slightly longer message can double the cost of an entire campaign.
